a series of meetings to re-read Colleoni
2026
The 550th anniversary is not only celebrated with exhibitions, but is also an opportunity for reflection and a revival of studies on the figure and material and cultural legacy of Bartolomeo Colleoni, military leader, patron, man of culture, and benefactor.
The Luogo Pio della Pietà Colleoni is organizing a series of study meetings in collaboration with universities and cultural institutions which, from February to October 2026, will give a voice to distinguished scholars who will offer original contributions in the fields of archiving, modern history, art, architecture, social history, and charity.

BARTOLOMEO COLLEONI. HIS TIME, HIS TESTAMENT.
Sala dei Giuristi, Palazzo del Podestà, Piazza Vecchia – Bergamo
560 years after the founding of Luogo Pio Colleoni and 550 years after the first meeting of the Council of Pietà following the death of the military leader, a series of meetings on Bartolomeo Colleoni, his era, and his legacy is inaugurated. The day is dedicated to the reasons behind the history of 15th-century Italy, between wars and piety. The first session will therefore explore the forms of power and institutions in cities, models of charity in northern Italy, and the circulation of culture reflected in Colleoni's entourage at the dawn of the modern age. The second session, dedicated to the mirror of history, addresses the comparison with Marshal Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, presents the historical archive of the Luogo Pio Colleoni, and offers food for thought for a reinterpretation of the figure of Colleoni through unpublished documentary material and an in-depth look at the first decade of activity of the Luogo Pio Colleoni.

The presentation aims to reinterpret the Colleoni Chapel within a broad framework of geography and cultural history, encompassing classical, medieval, and Renaissance Italy, by tracing some of the many architectural, iconographic, and monumental models that inspired the patron and his artists, while nonetheless guiding them toward an entirely new outcome.
