The will in which Bartolomeo Colleoni entrusted the fate of his estate reveals the moral, political, and philanthropic intentions of a man who wanted to leave his city a future of memory and solidarity. This precious document is the subject of the documentary exhibition Bartolomeo Colleoni: power and memory of self in the will of a military leader, curated by Lucia Citerio in collaboration with Luogo Pio Colleoni.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the will of 1475, of which the following are on display: the original notarial abbreviation, preserved in the State Archives of Bergamo in the deeds of the notary Antonio fu Andreolo Tiraboschi, and the solemn illuminated version (the so-called mundum) owned by the Colleoni family, written on parchment a few days after the condottiero's death, stored in the State Archives of Brescia in the Martinengo dalle Palle collection.
Alongside these are documents relating to the fiefdoms that made up Colleoni's estate, confirmations of privileges and exemptions enjoyed by these possessions, and another will from 1467, which was later revoked.
The exhibition explores a number of themes relating to the civil and religious institutions founded by Bartolomeo Colleoni, to which the commander bequeathed part of his fortune, entrusting his memory to their existence and activities over time: the Luogo Pio della Pietà, the convents of Santa Maria della Basella in Urgnano, Santa Maria Incoronata, and Santa Chiara in Martinengo. Finally, one section is dedicated to several works of art linked to the figure of Colleoni and the decoration of his chapel.
The documents, which belong to various archives, span the period from the mid-15th century to the early 20th century and also include photographs from the iconographic collection of the Italian Institute of Graphic Arts.
On loan from the Luogo Pio Colleoni, two printed copies of the founding document of the institution established by the condottiero in 1466 are also on display: Loci pii venerande pietatis institutio facta ab ill. Bartholomeo Coleono venetorum exercitus summo imp. Anno 1466, Bergamo, Comin Ventura, 1603 and Institutio pii loci magnificae pietatis Bergomi (...), Bergamo, Marco Antonio Rossi, 1655. These books contain handwritten notes by numerous generations of advisors and administrators of the Pietà Colleoni.
